The idea of ​​establishing an institution of medical education in Multan was first mooted by Dr. MJ Bhatta in 1945, at that time there was only one medical college in Punjab, i.e. King Edward Medical College in Lahore. The proportion of Muslim students in the college was very low. After the establishment of Pakistan on August 14, 1947, Muslim doctors migrated to Pakistan but their numbers were very few. This created a gap in the availability of medical doctors in the newly formed Muslim state. In view of this, Dr. Muhammad Jamal Bhatta and Dr. Colonel Malik were of the opinion that Punjab would need another medical college on a priority basis to meet the needs of the province in the near future. So the then governor of Punjab, Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar, made a historic announcement to establish a modern medical college and hospital in Multan.

After the announcement

The planning of the college and hospital started in which Dr. MJ Bhatta, Mr. Inamullah Shah, and Syed Ismail Ali Shah actively participated. Soon the Government of Punjab approved the project by approving it. The credit for such speedy approval should go to Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar, Inamullah and others. Alauddin Arshad. The next step was a detailed map of the college building. Somji, Inamullah, and Dr. MJ Bhatta worked day and night in this regard.

The idea of ​​the Dome and Nishtar Clock Tower was proposed by Dr. MJ Bhatta and Architectural Assistant respectively. On April 28, 1951, Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar laid the foundation stone. As construction began, the Anatomy and Physiology Departments were the first to be built. Meanwhile, staff and equipment were also arranged for the first batch. The inaugural ceremony was held on October 1, 1951, by the then Commissioner Inamullah Khan. The function was attend by the staff and students of the first batch. A total of 52 students was included in the first batch.
